Experiments with light – Not this try

Looks like it’s not working for me. Will break it up into smaller parts and see if I can see the problem.

May be that the ldr’s are wrong for the job, may get some that can handle the laser diodes better. Will find out some mirror lenses I have and also try and focus the beam better.

Its an experiment can’t expect it to work first time. Will keep trying another day then move onto something else and come back to it later.

It’s a bit of a thought puzzle I wanted to try anyway.

Experiments with light – 1 of many

Laser split success, more to do, but least I know this part works. Did have to fire it at an angle though. hashtag#play hashtag#learn hashtag#build hashtag#BryishSystems hashtag#electronics

Charity shop find

Found this in a charity shop a while ago, thought it would make a good solder practice kit. Not much to it.

Maths, Learning, growing

Mathematics is a creative thing, it is also philosophy. Patterns. My programming, design and development is all based on the patterns I see in thing.

Problem solving, whether it is solving an equation, or creating an algorithm, or experimentation using the scientific method is how I make sense of everything.

It makes me sad when I hear people telling me how proud they are of not being able to do or enjoy maths.

Once I have the time I hope to help spread the joy I get from solving problems. Failing and trying again until you have the solution. Failing is part of the learning process. We need more support for failure, because it is important to learning new things.

OK, will shut up now.

New day, time to rebuild

Had a terrible nights sleep, lot on my mind. Intending today to have a day of learning. Few Openlearn things, maybe try some certs or something. Have a large backlog of reading, maybe that.

Also found the original Kingdom of Riches PHP code (2006) and an empty template DB, which i have already installed to mariaDB. The whole thing needs a rewrite, and modernising. Have a ton of ideas for this. Then decide if worth getting hosting for it and see if anyone wants to play, like the old days. It ran from 2006 to about 2010, so maybe its an old genre now. PBBG still my favourite way to make forever friends.

Than have some 6502 and z80 study. Maybe do some maths study, and maybe some C++ stuff to get my hand back in. Always helps when my confidence has been knocked like the last few months.

As said before onwards and upwards.

Things end

So it seems I am now out of work. Its an end to that work, but the start of this. Will need another job, so looking, but in the downtime while I look for something new I will be working on the sites, projects and planning for this idea.

Its still only me that knows what it is all about, but it will slowly come clear as time goes on, though that maybe faster than expected since I need to pay the bills. No problem, sometime life throws these things at you to give you a nudge towards your real goals.

Laters, fingers crossed for me.

Ooops! I did it again.

So was looking on Amazon and found a c64, its a copy not the original, but it will do for what I want. So now learning to use it, and have a user manual and assembly language book from archive.org.

Seen a amiga mini thing too, may get that at some point.

So z80,6502 and the 68000 CPU’s to play with. Next will find a 6809, I think it was, Dragon 32 or Tandy coco. The search begins.

Its all part of my retro world now, get my joy back. Enjoying learning all over, for too long the modern boring simple tech has ground me into the ground, time to get back to proper hacking old systems.

Maybe start some arduino and other things in the near future.

New toy, old toy

I bought myself a 48k Sinclair Zx Spectrum+. I intend to take back up my Z80 machine language programming. I used to really love that method of coding. Forcing a 3.5mhz chip to move things at fast speeds around the screen.

It helped me get into the embedded systems job I held at Kanda Systems when the AVR microcontroller first came along, programming them with the Kanda/Atmel STK200 and STK300 boards. Developing firmware for the AVRIsp and using Delphi to create the ui for them. Happy times, miss that time, but also don’t miss the way I was burnt out there. Was maintaining about 40 projects in the end, mad for one developer.

Anyway, will see if I can find a way to show here how I will be progressing. In all my attempts to regain my joy of coding, building and making things, solving problems. It’s a life I do not want to give up.

New year

It’s a new year, still no progress on the site, sorry.

Over the last 5 months I have taken up a job, with 4 days of 12 hour shifts, then 4 days off. Its taken me a while to get my head around what I am doing, and allowing myself time to get back to the job in hand for all things Bryish related.

I hope to do more changes here, and start planning my down time to start getting my personal projects underway, now that I have cash to do so from my job.

Posting and updates to the site will come. Its not quite a business yet its going to take time, due to other commitments, but its ok, as I don’t want to rush things anyway, for this to work it has to be done right, and serve me for the future and the rest of my life. I doubt I will ever properly retire as I have too many interest to keep me active.

So over the coming days I will start changing the site to reflect what I want it to do, and maybe even put a few of my experiments in coding and hardware things up here and on YouTube. Its Bryan’s page (me) and as such will have me, Learning, building and playing. Not all serious, and not professional, as I hate all that elitist nonsense, just me having fun with things I like and hoping others like it too.

Maybe one day building a living from it. This is the start, its been a hard year or so, and I’m hoping 2024 will slowly make life easier for me.

For me its about doing things for me, that I like, as I have spent too much time making other people happy, by making them rich and improving their circumstances only to be dumped on the scrap heap at 55 with nothing but memories and promises that were never fullfilled.

This changes now.

LED’s give your data away

Was listening to the Security Now podcast today and they had a section on power LED’s flickering when data is being sent etc. I had the idea which I am going to try using a LDR to see if you see anything usable. Then try and detect data I am sending back and forth. Its an interesting experiment.

I remember years ago a customer I was working with was able to read a device, but not program it. They sent me their code and I tried it on a board I knew worked the same and I saw no problem at all.

So I got them to send me their hardware and I tried it again, nope no programming. So I started testing voltages, and found that the programming on that device caused the input line to not supply the correct voltage it required for a logic level. Little mod to the board and it worked.

I assume (and you now what that means for U and Me) this is a similar thing, voltage draw on the programming/reading on the device is dragging down the supply voltage a little and making the LED flicker. The flicker would probably not visible at all to the human eye, but enough to be seen as noise on a camera or an LDR.

So there is a thing for me to try out and see what I see.

NOTE: Bryish is on hold for a while, as I start a new job working 4 days on and 4 days off 12 hour shifts. So my time will be limited, but hopefully my band account will fill up and I can fund more things to do here.

Thanks for the views and things so far, its been 3 years of failed funding attempts, not due to me by the way, every one ran out of money or had their funding taken away. Was all a complete waste of time. Will not do that again, lesson learnt. Anyway, laters taters.
